A burn is an acute lesion of the skin and underlying tissues. A burn can be different: electric, radiation, chemical, thermal. In most situations in a domestic setting, a burn occurs with boiling water. How severe the damage to the skin and tissues will become - will depend on the location of the burn. The easiest way is to burn a hand with boiling water, accidentally pouring only boiled water.
It is most difficult to burn the face, neck, hips and shoulders, but in these parts of the body the burn will be much deeper than on the hands, even if the hot water did not last long. Burns of the back and lower extremities (especially in the area of the feet) can more rarely be deep, the healing process is faster. A burn of the face poses a serious danger to life, since such lesions are often accompanied by damage to the eyes, mouth, and respiratory system.
How to provide first aid for a burn with boiling water
As a rule, a person who has suffered a thermal burn is lost, begins to fuss and panic. Regardless of who overturned the freshly boiled water - an adult or a child, help should be provided immediately. What measures should be taken with a thermal burn?
Actions must be correct and clear:
- Take off wet things. In particular, you need to quickly get rid of synthetic clothing. At this point, you do not need to think about the price of things, you should not regret your favorite outfit. The quickest way to free the affected skin from clothing is to use scissors to cut the thing. Actions should be extremely accurate. We must try not to hook the skin with scissors so as not to injure the blisters. The resulting bubbles can not be rubbed and scratched, otherwise the infection will easily penetrate the inflamed skin.
- Place the affected area under cool water. It is necessary that the water jet is not too powerful. A good solution is to lower the burned place in a bathtub or basin where cold water is poured. In a similar way, it will be possible to prevent the appearance of edema, reduce pain, and cool damaged skin and nearby tissues. After 15 minutes, you need to wet the skin with a clean, non-rigid cloth without lint, apply a sterile dressing. In no case should you bandage the damaged area, it must be covered in the skin, not rubbed and pressed on it. The larger the number of bubbles, the less weak the bandage.
Degree of burn
What measures need to be taken with a thermal burn depends on its degree. To determine it, you should pay attention to the following symptoms:
- The first degree - there is redness and a slight burn of the skin, a person feels pain of varying severity, there are no blisters.
- The second degree - after a few minutes, bubbles appear in the affected area, filled with transparent yellow liquid content. The victim feels strong pain.
- The third degree - a large number of bubbles appear, the skin begins to "peel off". Severe pain syndrome, the surface of the skin is a scarlet wound. Dark or gray scabs appear on the site where the tissue is dead.
The fourth degree is diagnosed when more than 50 percent of the skin has been affected. The condition of the victim is rapidly deteriorating, he is experiencing pain shock. Where the burns are the deepest, scars and ulcers are formed that do not heal.Until the moment when the patient recovers, not a single month can pass. After serious damage to the skin, aesthetic defects often remain that spoil the appearance of a person.
Fact! The defeat of boiling water in very rare cases leads to a burn of the fourth degree. Basically, the first or second, not so often the third degree of burns is diagnosed.
Is it possible to apply ointment to a burned place?
Many try to smear a sore spot with a medicine immediately after receiving a burn. However, before doing this, one should recall the very important saying “Do no harm!”. If in doubt, it is better not to apply any ointment to the affected skin.
You can not smear the wound with oils, animal or vegetable fats, oily ointments, because because of this, the temperature of the affected area cannot decrease, under the oily film, microbes multiply rapidly.
Treatment methods
After the person who received the burn is given the necessary first aid, you need to contact a medical institution or call a doctor at home. It should focus on the condition of the victim and the severity of the damage. In case of serious burns, emergency care must be called immediately.
A severe patient will be treated under intensive care in a specialized burn ward. With third and fourth degree burns, hospitalization means saving the life of the victim - with severe thermal burns, infection is often introduced into the wound, which is dangerous due to serious complications.
